Statistics about Metastatic Breast Cancer

  • While 80-90% of breast cancer patients are cured, many (nearly 1/5) will experience a serious recurrence of their disease or are diagnosed initially with advanced, or metastatic, breast cancer. There is an urgent need for better, safer and more successful treatments for recurrent breast cancer.
  • Though women with recurrent breast cancer are living longer with the disease, an estimated 41,000 women died of metastatic breast cancer in 2008. More successful cancer treatment is on the horizon as we ultimately search for a cure for metastatic breast cancer.
