
Dr. Paula Silverman and Janice Lyons, M.D. of University Hospitals Ireland Cancer Center
Dr. Paula Silverman is Medical Director of the Breast Cancer Program at the Ireland Cancer Center of University Hospitals Case Medical Center (UHCMC). For the past 20 years, she has led the interdisciplinary breast cancer team and promoted excellence in breast cancer care and cutting edge research.
Her research has taken her to ASCO, the nation’s largest cancer research conference, and to the National Cancer Institute, where she and her group presented significant findings in their research. They pioneered the use of chemotherapy with bevacizumab (Avastin), finding that it is well tolerated in patients with locally advanced breast cancer. Dr. Silverman has also been involved with research using trastuzumab (Herceptin), a new breast cancer treatment that is as a major breakthrough in breast cancer treatment.
Dr. Silverman graduated from Oberlin College and Case Western Reserve University Medical School. She performed her internal medicine residency and hematology and oncology fellowship at University Hospitals of Cleveland and affiliated CWRU hospitals. She has been on staff at UH since 1988, an associate professor of medicine at CWRU since 1998 and is currently the Associate Chief of Clinical Operations, Division of Hematology/Oncology, UHCMC.
Dr. Silverman is a member of several professional societies including the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), Breast Committee, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. She serves as an Ad-Hoc Reviewer for Breast Cancer Research and Treatment and the New England Journal of Medicine. She serves on the Professional Advisory Board of the Gathering Place, the Medical Advisory committee of the American Cancer Society, Cuyahoga Unit, and the Montefiore Home Board of Directors, to name a few.
Dr. Silverman has lectured extensively and has many peer-reviewed articles and abstracts in scientific journals.
